The 2015–2016 Loft Mentor Series in Poetry and Creative Prose presents poetry mentor Sherry Quan Lee reading along with program participants Isela Xitlali Gómez (nonfiction) and Lynda McDonnell (fiction).

The reading is scheduled for January 29, 2016 at the Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis, MN and will feature Sherry Quan Lee, author of poetry books How to Write a Suicide Note and Chinese Blackbird, published by Modern History Press. In 2014, Lee published Love Imagined: A Mixed Race Memoir with the same press. Her published work has focused deeply on issues of race, womanhood, and identity in a modern, multicultural society. Aside from book publishing, Sherry Quan Lee also blogs at where she offers advice on writing and critique of poetry.Love Imagined

At the Loft Literary Center, Sherry Quan Lee will read her newest poems, which are about her grandson, who is a non-verbal autistic child. Also she may get in a prose piece from Love Imagined: A Mixed Race Memoir.

“I think for a general audience prose often has more impact,” says the author. Poetry is more heavily laden with metaphor which may be difficult to interpret, open wider for interpretation but the sound and the rhythm create tone, creates attitude which also communicates a message.”

Sherry Quan Lee feels stories of growing up in multicultural environment contribute to personal empowerment and peace. In her words:

“I think understanding and respect comes from others with similar stories—it makes us feel not quite as crazy to know we’re not alone, and to know others have survived, even thrived despite the social, political, racial environments we may have grown up in.”
