How to Keep Gums Healthy and Clean

Keeping your gums clean is the key to having a bright smile. In fact, the health of your dentals is usually reflected on the appearance of the gums. Neglected gums are actually at risk of contracting gum disease, a condition that often leads to cavities and loss of teeth if not treated. The good thing is that you don’t have to wait until you are diagnosed by a dentist to know whether you have gum disease. For a start, the gums become swollen and they tend to bleed when you brush your teeth. The gums also feel more tender than usual. In addition to that, you may experience bad breath in the mouth after brushing your teeth.

The problem is that most people until the damage is already done to seek treatment. And since prevention is always better than cure, you should maintain high standards of oral hygiene to keep your gums free from infections. Here is a list of things you should do to keep your gums healthy.

1. Floss Teeth Daily

Falcon Dental Group recommends flossing your teeth on a daily basis. This is because flossing helps in removing the dirt particles that might have survived from the rough bristles of a toothbrush. In fact, there are certain areas of your mouth that a toothbrush can’t reach due to its design. The most crucial area is normally between individual teeth. If this area is left untouched, germs and bacteria will build up there and infect your gums. Keep in mind that gum disease can trigger heart disease in case the infection gets into the bloodstream.

2. Go for Dental Cleaning

By the rule of thumb, you should make sure you have gone for dental cleaning at least once per year. This is because there are some stains that you can’t eliminate by brushing with an ordinary toothbrush. These stains are the ones that advance to form plague which later causes the gums to become infected. In fact, dentists usually use advanced tools to clean teeth, meaning nothing can be too much for them. The other advantage is that the dentist will examine every inch of your dentals, including the gums. This helps in ensuring that dental problems are detected and treated early.

3. Brush Teeth Daily

When food particles are allowed to build up in the mouth, they eventually encourage the breeding of harmful bacteria. Drinks such as coffee and tea have the ability to stain your teeth. Such problems can be avoided by brushing your teeth after every meal. But even if you are not able to do that, you should at least brush your teeth in the morning and in the evening before going to bed. 

The problem is that most people only brush in the morning because they want to have a fresh breath when going to school or work. Brushing in the evening is highly recommended because harmful bacteria are active when your mouth is not active as you sleep. You should also make sure the toothpaste that you use has fluoride. And last but not least, you should sum it up by rinsing your dentals with a mouth wash.
