Turn Your Home into a Bed and Breakfast

Turn Your Home into a Bed and Breakfast

by Daniel Bell

Running a bed and breakfast is a popular choice of business for many people. A lot of people decide to do it when they retire or toward the end of their career. Some choose to move home and buy somewhere that can double as a business. If it’s something you’re interested in doing, you have to give it a lot of thought. It’s not something that will run itself, and you have to put a lot of work in. Your first step needs to be converting or, at least, redecorating the property to make it suitable. Start your journey to owning a B&B by following the steps below.bed-and-breakfast

Redesign the Bedrooms

If you want to run a B&B, you need to be able to think about what your guests are looking for. You might have a personal taste when it comes to the bedrooms. But that won’t necessarily be what the guests want. It’s best to stick to the safe side and try to keep your rooms more or less neutral. Of course, you can add decorative touches, but there’s no need to go overboard. One important thing to consider is bathrooms. If each room doesn’t already have an ensuite, you should seriously consider putting them in. You’ll be able to charge more if your guests don’t have to share.

Provide Eating and Lounging Areas

Serving breakfast is a vital part of running a B&B, so you need somewhere your guests can eat. You should consider how you want to set up your eating area to please your guests. Some businesses choose to have one large table for everyone, while others want smaller tables. Make sure everything is neat and looks professional with linen tablecloths for hotels and commercial use. You can find them at excellent prices, and they will give your dining space a cleaner look. Your kitchen needs to be equipped for making breakfast too, whether you’re going to provide cooked dishes or a buffet.

Make Your Business Stand Out

If you choose the right location, you’ll probably have other B&Bs in the area to compete with. You need to show that yours is the best by making it stand out. One of the ways you can do this is by offering unique services and packages. For example, maybe you live in an area where cycling is popular. You could provide bike storage and maps for people who come to cycle. You can team up with local businesses to create packages that will attract people.

Get Organized

Running a B&B isn’t just letting people stay in your home. It’s a business, and you have to treat it as such. As soon as you can, you should start taking care of all the business aspects of your B&B. These can include setting up a booking system and creating a website. You should form a marketing plan and sort out any paperwork you need to file. There’s a lot of work to do, so don’t leave it until the last minute.

Bed and breakfast accommodation can be an excellent business, but you have to be prepared. Don’t underestimate how much work you need to put into it.
