Meet John Doe (1941) – The Heelots

Meet John Doe (1941) by Frank Capra summarized the life of the modern man in the west in more than one way. The story of a poor man hired to play a motivational speaker who can attract public attention across America only to find out that he is being used without his knowledge or will was made into a realistic drama that remains ever more relevant today.

Early in the movie, The Colonel (Walter Brennan) says it all about the illusion of freedom in the developed society where the “heelots” hogtie the average citizen in the “comforts” of modern living. Eighty years later, The Colonel’s words ring true more than ever.

  1. Meet John Doe is a classic. The theme and words ring true today which is both thought provoking and sad. To think we have not evolved as a society and still hold on to the old habits and continue to be misguided by those we place our trust in. Thank you Ernest Dempsey for this great review.
