What Karmelo Anthony’s Legal Fundraiser Tells Us

Last week when black teenager Karmelo Anthony was sentenced to 35 years of prison for the brutal murder of white teen student Austin Metcalf, the leftists predictably flocked in support of Anthony. When the incident happened in April 20205, both Anthony and Metcalf were 17. Under Texas law, 17-year-olds can be tried in such offenses as adults so Anthony was legally tried and found guilty of first-degree murder.

Following Anthony’s 35-year prison sentence, black commentator Stephen A. Smith was seen calling the sentence excessive for a young first-time offender that essentially destroys his life. The biased and insensitive comment was called out on social media where many demanded a life without parole for Anthony, which the murderer’s age at the time of the killing prevented by the law of the land.

The disturbing fact that Anthony’s legal defense fund via a public fundraiser received well over half a million dollars is indicative of the amount of support criminals receive in America based on the color of their skin. The fundraiser was reportedly taken down after Anthony was convicted and the public was told:

“The fundraiser was to support pre-trial needs, and those funds were disbursed over the last year.”

The question is: how were those funds used? Were they really spent all or in part on Anthony’s legal defense? Just last week, media stories came out revealing that Anthony’s family used the funds for other expenses. When the story came out, the fundraiser website quickly put out an explanation that confirmed the story’s claims:

“While legal defense is a critical part of this journey, we want to make it clear that this fund is not solely dedicated to legal expenses. The funds raised will also support a range of urgent and necessary means that have emerged as a result of the situation…”

Raising money off legal defense along racial and political lines of loyalty has unofficially become big business in the country. Your kid murders someone, you cry out help on the basis of your race, and those hating the victim’s race and/or loyal to your ethnic identity open their pockets. It’s classic political war instantiated in a single but representative case.

The reported misuse of Anthony’s murder defense fundraiser calls for the need to reform the law regarding such public campaigns. Such fundraisers needs to be audited by the state or federal authorities like the Department of Homeland Security to make sure the money is not being spent on activities and expenses that result in more victims like Metcalf. It’s a question of public safety.
