Why do conservatives act so late when it comes to issues of national importance? This question sits atop the recent step by Florida to ban illegal aliens from enrolling in state colleges across the state.
As Inside Higher Ed reported early this month, Florida’s State Board of Education voted almost unanimously to deny illegal aliens – or what the establishment media likes to call “undocumented migrants” – admission to the 28-college system of the state. The new rule requires the state colleges to verify the prospective student’s citizenship or proof of legal presence in the country if he/she is to be enrolled in the college.
Now this is a step in the right direction and the nearly unanimous vote supporting it is good news as well. What raises concern is the delay of the authorities in addressing the problem and taking action. This is the second DeSantis administration and Republicans have been in majority in these offices across the state for 8 years at least. Yet only now have they moved to do the right thing. Why not in the first year if not on day one? One can even ask why now – any political motives ahead of midterms?
But an even bigger question springs from the number of states that have taken this measure of banning illegal aliens from state colleges – only four, including FL. The other states that have banned illegal aliens from enrolling in states’ higher education institutions include Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. With at least half of the country’s 50 states being conservative, why has there been no action against illegal aliens enrolling in these state colleges and universities?
The answer, more likely than not, is money. Banning these non-Americans and illegal individuals from state colleges means losing millions of dollars a year. And most of these conservatives would rather benefit from the money these illegal aliens bring with them rather than act against them in favor of the country. This is one of the many indicators that show the two sides – red and blue – working together against the America-First policy for the entire country.
