The Mudlark gave the news of Shell suspending drilling in the Arctic following the ruling of Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, which deemed Department of the Interior’s sale of offshore oil and gas leases in Alaska’s Chukchi Sea a violation of law. Shell has announced officially now that it won’t carry out drilling in the Arctic in 2014.
The announcement has left some lawmakers unhappy as reported by The Mudlark, which quoted Senator Mark Begich as “It is simply unacceptable that judicial overreach is getting in the way of letting Alaskans develop our own natural resources.”
But for animal rights advocates and environmental activists, the news amounts to big achievement. Alaska Wilderness League congratulated its supports in an email message over this recent development, calling it a victory.
“By raising the profile of Shell’s mishaps and continuing to push back against its horrendous 2014 plan, you helped us show America that no oil company is ready to drill in the Arctic,” read the message from Alaska Wilderness League.
In a similar message, Attorney Erik Grafe of Earthjustice extended appreciation of the organization to all supporters whose donation and advocacy helped claim this win for earth and its life.
“Together we have done what many thought was impossible,” Grafe’s message read.
