Are You Seeking Help With Benzodiazepine Addiction?

The first thing we need to learn about is what Benzodiazepine is. Over 21 million Americans suffered from a substance abuse problem in 2014. This number has only continued to rise. Many people began taking medications like Benzodiazepine as prescribed by a Doctor to treat issues such as anxiety and depression. However, after some time many people begin to take them to get high or to get the euphoric feeling the drugs produce. Benzodiazepine includes drugs such as:

  • Xanax- Used to treat anxiety and panic disorder
  • Klonopin- Used to treat seizure disorders and panic disorders
  • Valium- Treats alcohol withdrawal symptoms, anxiety disorders, and muscle spasms
  • Ativan- Designed to treat panic disorders

Once addicted, it is almost impossible to stop on your own and doing so can be life-threatening without medical intervention. Because trying to come off of benzos is so serious it is strongly recommended you check into a detox center or rehab where you can be monitored and detoxed safely.

Most rehab centers average 28-day stays but they can be longer depending on your specific needs.

Life After Rehabilitation

Once you have successfully been detoxed from the physical dependency and completed rehab, there is still work to be done. The road to recovery is not easy or short. You will probably need to find another way to manage your anxiety or depression if this was the case for taking benzos.

There are some non-addictive, non-narcotic medications available to manage depression and anxiety. You can also try some natural approaches such as meditation to help alleviate some of the stress. For others, their addiction to benzos was from buying the drugs illicitly off the street. Either way, must be vigilant in recovery and keep your sobriety front and center. Stay away from people and places that may put you in a position to be around drugs. Also, you should make your prescribing doctor aware of what’s going on so they can be a part of your success.

The hardest part is realizing that there is a path of abstinence available while also still addressing your anxiety or depression disorder if they existed, to begin with. With the right professional care everyone is capable of living a clean, drug free and sober life.
